Running hot CPUs and multi-GPU setups demands more than a stock cooler — here's how to pick the right AIO or custom loop for your AI workstation, from budget 360mm sealed units to full open-loop RTX 5090 builds.

Threadripper PRO adds another divide: its large sTR5 heat spreader needs a dedicated full-coverage cold plate, not a consumer AM5 bracket adapted by wishful thinking.

Its pump sits on the radiator rather than the CPU block, reducing block height and allowing coolant to reach the pump before collecting CPU heat. Three 120mm PWM fans reach 2,800 RPM. The ASRock WS TR 360D, listed at an observed $429.99 through Newegg, is better suited to uptime-sensitive professional work. It combines a 38mm radiator, full-copper brazed cold plate and dual pumps with a failure buzzer. Its LCP fans have IP54 dust and water resistance, dual-ball bearings and copper-alloy hubs. Compatibility includes sTR5/SP6 and older workstation sockets including sWRX8, sTRX4, TR4 and SP3; the warranty is six years.

Threadripper verdict: For stock 350W operation, the SilverStone XE360-TR5 at $399–$430 is the proven choice. Choose the ASRock WS TR 360D when dual-pump redundancy and failure notification matter more than saving $30. Both beat any consumer AIO with an improvised bracket.

Custom Open Loops for RTX 5090 Workstations

A full loop needs a GPU block, radiator and static-pressure fans, D5 or DDC pump, reservoir, matching tubing and fittings, coolant, and filling and leak-testing equipment. A beginner CPU-only foundation was estimated at about $500 before GPU blocks and additional radiator capacity. For planning, use roughly 120mm of radiator area per 100W of heat load. It combines 32GB of GDDR7 with a 360mm aluminum radiator, a patented block cooling the GPU and VRAM, an integrated pump and STORMFORCE fans. Gaming Mode lists a 2,565MHz boost clock and up to 2,580MHz through MSI Center; Silent Mode lists 2,512MHz and 2,527MHz respectively. The principal constraint is chassis space: the workstation must accommodate its radiator in addition to any CPU radiator.

A Brief Case for Air

The Noctua NH-U14S TR5-SP6 remains relevant for a stock 350W Threadripper workstation where simplicity and low noise outweigh maximum sustained boost. Its 70×56mm copper base covers the large processor, and it uses two 140mm NF-A15 fans. Around $139.95, it is substantially cheaper than dedicated Threadripper AIOs. Liquid becomes more compelling for prolonged high-power operation, PBO or dense multi-GPU systems where socket-area airflow and physical clearance are constrained.
